Life Lessons at The Hatlen Center for the Blind 9:00 am – 12 Noon

The Hatlen Center for the Blind is a world-class nonprofit organization located in San Pablo that teaches visually impaired, mostly young adults, the skills they need in order to live independent, fulfilling lives. Students live in their own apartments integrated into a large apartment complex in the community. Students design their own “curriculum” – whether it be learning to sweep the floor, cook gourmet meals, or travel to an upcoming Justin Bieber concert. During this half-day tour, talk to the center’s clients and their teachers and discover how scared, nervous enrollees turn into confident, independent graduates.

Transportation will be BART, then pick-up by Hatlen Center for the Blind to their facility and transportation back to BART.

Getting to Know Guide Dogs

9:00 am – 12 Noon

Come and visit us at Guide Dogs for the Blind’s San Rafael campus. You will tour our campus, see the puppies in the kennels and talk with our staff and alumni about admissions criteria, our new two- and three-week class programs, follow up graduate services, veterinary care program and more. “Juno walks” will be provided, as well as a hands-on grooming workshop.

Transportation by Guide Dogs van for up to 10 people. If there are more, we’ll have to arrange car pools.

The LightHouse for the Blind

and Ed Roberts Campus

Travel by BART to the LightHouse’s San Francisco campus and tour the facilities. Then hop on BART again to the Ashby station in Berkeley, location of the Lighthouse’s satellite site at the brand new Ed Roberts Campus. Tour this state-of-the-art, universally designed facility, offering

music teacher and director, he was recently involved with a Fine Arts Program at the University of Wisconsin, and has been a guest lecturer at San Francisco State University and U.C. Berkeley. Wayne is no stranger to CTEBVI, having presented workshops at conference for many years, and publishing numerous articles concerning music education for the visually impaired. He is currently serving his 1st term as a member of the CTEBVI Board of Directors. His award winning Jazz Ensemble at the California School for the Blind continues to perform regularly for various State functions and conferences.

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Stuart Wittenstein

Dr. Stuart Wittenstein is in his 15th year as superintendent of the California School for the Blind. He is a life member of CTEBVI and served on the Board of Directors for six years, including four years as Secretary. A strong advocate for braille literacy, Dr. Wittenstein was the braille teacher at the Texas School for the Blind, and also taught the

braille and Nemeth code courses in the teacher preparation programs of Hunter College and Teachers College, Columbia University.

Dr. Wittenstein is the immediate Past President of the Council of Schools for the Blind, a national organization of superintendents of special schools for blind learners. He is the Chair of the Editorial Advisory Committee of the Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness, the international journal of record in the blindness field.

Dr. Wittenstein is a Past President of the Division on Visual Impairments of the Council for Exceptional Children. In 1994 he received the division’s Outstanding Dissertation of the Year award, and in 2006 he received the division’s Distinguished Service Award.

His published writings and presentations have been primarily in the areas of assessment, transition, braille literacy, legislative issues, and in the need for specialized services for individuals with visual impairments. He is co-editor of “Collaborative Assessment: Working with Students Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired, Including Those with Additional Disabilities,” a textbook used in preparing teachers to evaluate students who are blind.

The Luncheon will also include General Business Session, Part 1.

Defining Our Future: A Winning Hand Banquet Keynote Speaker: Wendy S. David, Ph.D.

Dr. David is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist who works in the Women’s Trauma and Recovery Center at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System in Seattle. She received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Washington in 1991, and is also a Clinical Associate

Professor with the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington. She presents both locally and internationally on various aspects of disability, personal safety, and mental health.

Dr. David’s specialty is trauma treatment, and she is skilled in Cognitive Behavioral and Evidence Based treatments

for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, depression, and eating disorders. She treats individuals, couples, families, and groups and has developed many innovative treatment programs for trauma survivors at the VA.

She has published two books in the field of blindness

and empowerment which have received wide acclaim around the world. Her first book, “Safe Without Sight: Crime Prevention and Self Defense Strategies for People Who Are Blind” (David, McCall, and Kollmar, 1998), serves as the foundation of personal safety curricula in schools and agencies for visually impaired individuals around the country and in Australia. Her most recent book, “Sites Unseen: Traveling the World without Sight” (David, 2010) (see excerpt in Summer 2010 issue of JOURNAL), promotes travel and serves as a resource guide to assist

and encourage travel and tourism by individuals with visual impairment. Both books are available in multiple formats through the National Braille Press in Boston

(www.nbp. org). She lives with her husband and their two guide dogs, and when not working, writing, or presenting, enjoys skiing, reading, going to concerts and the theater, and, of course, traveling.

Born in Japan, Ayaka Isono received her Bachelor of Music from Indiana University, Bloomington, and her Master of Music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, taking her piano studies with Mack McCray, Marc Steiner, John Bloomfield, Paul Hersh, Eckert Selheim. Boaz Sharon, Shigeo Neriki, and Hiroshi Tajika. She has received awards and scholarships from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Indiana University, AIMS Music Festival in Austria, Piano Master Class in the Czech Republic, and Madeline Island Chamber Music Festival in

Minnesota. Ms. Isono has performed throughout the United States and Europe, and locally, has worked and performed with the San Francisco Symphony, Oakland Ballet, and

the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She has also been on the piano faculty of the San Domenico School in San Anselmo, California. As a collaborative artist, she has performed with principal musicians of the New York Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera, Chicago Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Boston Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, San Francisco Opera, San Francisco Ballet, Oregon Ballet Theater Symphony, San Antonio Symphony, and New Zealand National Symphony.

Ms. Isono lost her sight to a rare retinal disorder in 2001, yet continues to teach and perform, now studying her scores by braille. She is a member of the Music Teachers’ Association of California (MTAC) and the Music Education Network for the Visually Impaired (MENVI). In 2007, Ms. Isono was profiled on NBC news, and continuing her notable achievements, she has resumed CD recordings,

her most recent being ALL BACH, available through various online merchants. As a braille music educator,

Ms. Isono has been a guest speaker at San Francisco State University. She will give a lecture on braille music at the 2011 conference.

BANA Tactile Diagram Guidelines

Presenter: Katrina Ostby

BANA’s new Guidelines and Standards for Tactile Graphics have been approved. This workshop will provide an overview of the new guidelines.

Katrina Ostby has served as a Tactile Graphic Specialist for CTEBVI for three years. She has given workshops on creating collage tactile graphics and lectures on using Microsoft Word and Adobe Illustrator to design tactile graphics at CTEBVI and NBA conferences.

Nemeth Spatial Arrangements

Presenter: Mary Denault

This workshop will cover Nemeth Code spatial arrangements. This will include addition, subtraction, division, cancellation of fractions, carried numbers, determinants, matrices and unified expressions. Rules

for spacing, use of the numeric indicator and cancellation will be discussed. There will be examples to discuss as

a group.

Mary Denault is the CTEBVI Mathematics Specialist. She is Literary, Braille Formats and Nemeth Code certified. Mary works for Alternate Text Production Center as Senior Formatter and is on the NBA Mathematics Committee and BANA Mathematics Committee.

Panelists: Lois Wood, Transcriber, San Bernardino County Schools and Yvette Kalapp, Braille Specialist, San Bernardino County Schools.

This workshop will present practical, inexpensive and easy to use solutions and adaptations to make producing materials for braille students easier. We like to make materials our kids can and will use. We will include shortcuts to tactile diagrams, and hands on solutions for

braille writing, science and math, as well as daily life skills and leisure activities, all with items that can be easily obtained and modified.

Pam Hazen has 35 years experience as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired; she has experience with multi handicapped and deaf blind. She currently teaches in a Special Day Class/Resource Room for visually impaired students, grades 7-12.

Lynnelle McCray has over ten years experience as a transcriber and is the parent of a visually impaired son. She and Pam have worked together for the last eight years

meeting the unique needs of students in their classroom as well as mainstream students in other schools.

iPhone Apps for TVIs for the New Semester

Presenter: Sunggye Hong

Between keeping track of IEP meetings and remembering all those tools and equipment for your upcoming new semester, it can really be a daunting task for even well-seasoned TVIs to be on top of everything. The iPhone can help. Ten of the most helpful apps for TVIs on the iPhone will be introduced. Just a few of the apps available include an IEP checklist and GPS application.

Sunggye Hong is an assistant professor at San Francisco State University. He taught an assistive technology course at the university level. He uses an iPhone and related applications for his personal and professional needs.

Teaching Typing, Computer Skills & Academic Subjects to the Visually Impaired Using TypeAbility 4.0

Presenter: David Pinto

This workshop will introduce teachers to using TypeAbility to teach the following:

  • Keyboard typing skills including navigation and document editing

  • Running TypeAbility’s Comprehensive Academic tests.

  • Creating/Importing your own Academic lessons and tests

David Pinto is a professor of music and computers at Pierce College, Director of the Academy of Music for the Blind, and software developer for YesAccessible! Using software programs that he developed, he has taught academics, keyboarding skills, music recording and printing to hundreds of blind children and adults. His music recording students have included celebrities such as Stevie Wonder, Dianne Shuur, Marcus Roberts, and the late Ray Charles. He has been featured twice on the CBS news program “60 Minutes.”

AIM Higher with Bookshare! Part I Presenter: Donna McNear

During this workshop participants will learn more about IDEA 2004 and the importance of providing timely access to accessible instructional materials (AIM) for all students with print disabilities. Participants will learn about the Chafee law and the National Instructional Materials Access Center (NIMAC) and what this means for getting accessible books into the hands of K-12 students with print disabilities. Finally, participants will learn about one

free resource called Bookshare and how Bookshare offers a one-stop-shop for gaining access to reading materials that students with print disabilities can use and benefit from.

Donna McNear is an independent educational consultant with a certificate in professional development from

the University of Minnesota, a retired career teacher for students with visual impairments, and a certified

orientation and mobility specialist. She is a Past President of the Division on Visual Impairments, Council of Exceptional Children and previous board member for

the Braille Authority of North America and The National Agenda for the Education of Children and Youths with

Visual Impairments, including those with Additional Disabilities. Ms. McNear was a principal investigator

for OSEP funded research projects in braille assessment and interventions and co-author of a braille assessment. She served on the NIMAS Advisory Board and was the lead consultant to the Pacific CIMAP, an accessible instructional materials initiative. In 2008 she received the Outstanding Leadership Award from the Council for Exceptional Children.

The Cool Trekker Breeze and the Simplicity of an Accessible GPS Device

Presenter: Kevin Hughes

In this session attendees will get a look at the continuous progress of an important orientation tool for the blind. Attendees will gain perspective on relevant application

of the Trekker Breeze in exploring new environments and traveling regular routes with confidence and independence. Additionally attendees will have the opportunity to sign up for a “Trekker Breeze walk” directly following the session.

Kevin Hughes has been involved with assistive technology for the blind and visually impaired for ten years.
